Engaging and training Generation Y

Generation Ys, born between 1980 and 2000, are well and truly established in the workforce. In fact, by 2025, Generation Y’s will account for 75% of the workforce.

Generation Y don't need any convincing on the benefits of technology. They're already in it. According to a 2014 Nielson study, Generation Y strongly believe that technology is positively changing their lives, with  60% admitting to compulsively checking their smartphones for emails, texts for social media updates.

As smartphones and tablets are becoming the new standard for productivity and connectivity; technology should become the foundation for the delivery of professional development – allowing individuals to delve into bite sized responsive learning, available on all devices at all times.

Your average Generation Y-er is used to being part of vast community who share huge amounts of information about themselves. Just look at the growth of Twitter to see this in practice. Individuals can choose how and when they engage with the content – streaming it live to their Smart TV, or downloading and playing it on a ‘Rewind and Replay’ basis on their iPhone or iPad.

There are lessons for business here in how Generation Ys receive and use information:

  • Tell people to read the entire email – Generation Ys tend to read the subject line and filter, so tell them in the subject line to read the whole email
  • Introduce punchier information – Generation Ys love bullet points. They tend to scan for them and prioritise them
  • Add images and/or video to get information across
  • Explore using text messages instead of emails, if the information is only a line or two
