Chris Elphick

Inclusion & Wellbeing Lead

About Angela Bowen β€” Director of Apprenticeships Angela holds senior leadership responsibility for the apprenticeship provision at HTFT Partnership, providing strategic oversight across all aspects of programme delivery β€” including inclusion, additional learning support, and learner wellbeing. As Director of Apprenticeships, Angela ensures that equity and accessibility sit at the heart of everything HTFT Partnership does, championing the needs of every learner at the highest level of the organisation. Angela leads and supports Chris Elphick in his role as Inclusion & Wellbeing Lead, ensuring that the team has the direction, resource, and senior backing needed to make a genuine difference to apprentices' experiences.
About Chris Elphick β€” Inclusion & Wellbeing Lead Chris leads HTFT Partnership's day-to-day approach to inclusion and learner wellbeing, reporting directly into Angela Bowen. Working closely with Skills Coaches and employers, Chris plays a central role in developing strategies that promote equitable access to learning, identify barriers early, and connect learners with the right support at the right time. Chris also acts as a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL), working with Helen Lamb, the DSL at HTFT, meaning learners can be confident that their wellbeing is supported in a holistic, joined-up way across HTFT Partnership.

Our Approach to Additional Learning Support

Our ALS team supports learners who have disclosed a disability, learning difficulty or medical condition β€” ensuring we uphold the key principles of the Equality Act 2010 and the SEND Code of Practice 2015 throughout their apprenticeship.

πŸ” Initial Assessment

Every learner who discloses a learning difficulty or disability is contacted personally by Inclusion and Wellbeing Lead Chris Elphick, who invites them to an initial meeting to discuss their support needs. Every apprentice is asked to complete an Initial Cognitive Assessment to help identify any areas where additional support may be beneficial, and every learner has this available to them on request. AAT accept the results of this Cognitive Assessment when awarding additional time where a need is identified. CIMA and ACCA still require a signed Form 8 from a qualified practitioner.

πŸ“‹ Personalised Support Plan

A tailored support plan is created by Chris based on each learner's individual needs, drawing on the outcomes of their initial meeting and cognitive assessment. 1:2:1 sessions with Chris are available to work through barriers to learning and put agreed strategies in place.

πŸ“… Regular Check-ins

We provide regular check-ins to every supported learner β€” on a weekly, fortnightly, or monthly basis depending on the level of support required. These touchpoints ensure learners feel consistently supported and that any new barriers are identified and addressed quickly.

πŸ”„ Graduated Review

We follow a graduated Assess, Plan, Do, Review, Taper approach, with support reviewed as a minimum every quarter to ensure it remains appropriate. We assess each learner's needs, plan and put support in place, deliver it, then review its impact β€” tapering support as barriers are removed and confidence grows. Adjustments can be made at any point to ensure equitable access to programme content and resources.

Types of Support Available

We provide a wide range of tailored support, designed around the individual. Below are examples of what our ALS team can offer:

  • Supported enrolment to identify reasonable adjustments before learning begins
  • Reviewing and adapting programme resources for specific learning needs
  • Receiving resources in advance to aid familiarisation with course content
  • 1:2:1 support sessions to overcome barriers to learning
  • Study, revision and focus management techniques
  • Planning, drafting and proofreading support
  • Assistive technology guidance and support
  • Exam access arrangements and reasonable adjustments for assessments
  • Supporting conversations with employers about workplace adjustments
  • Advice on formal assessment and diagnosis of learning difficulties
  • Referrals to external support organisations and wellbeing services

Support, Tools & Tips to Help You Study Your Way

At HTFT Partnership we want every learner to be able to study in the way that works best for them. This guide brings together the support, technology and practical tips that can make your studies more accessible β€” whether you learn best by listening, reading, watching, or a mix of all three. There is no single right way to study. Use whatever combination helps you understand the concepts and feel confident going into your exams.

All of our recorded content sits on Vimeo. The player has several built-in features that make watching easier.

πŸ’¬ Subtitles β€” Turn on Captions

Click the "CC" button on the bottom toolbar to switch subtitles on. Captions can help if you find it easier to read along while you listen, or if you're studying somewhere noisy.

πŸ“„ Transcript β€” Read the Words Instead

Click the transcript button to open a full written transcript. You can read it instead of, or alongside, watching. There's also a search box so you can jump straight to a topic.

⚑ Speed β€” Slow It Down or Speed It Up

Click the settings (cog) button, then choose "Speed". Slow the video down to take in detail, or speed it up to review something you already know.

If you are dyslexic, have ADHD, or simply want strategies that suit how your brain works, these organisations offer practical, accessible advice.

Practical advice on reading, writing, organisation and exams.

Advice for adults & students β†’

πŸŽ™οΈ Neurodiversity Podcast (UK)

Short, accessible episodes on dyslexia, ADHD and learning strategies. Available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Audio learning can be much easier than long stretches of reading, and it's great for picking up concepts while you're out walking or commuting.

  • Freakonomics Radio β€” Explains economic thinking through stories rather than equations
  • More or Less (BBC Radio 4) β€” Brilliant for numeracy, statistics and questioning data claims
  • The Economics Show (BBC Sounds) β€” Academic topics explained slowly and clearly
  • ACCA Student Accountant Podcast β€” Short, exam-focused episodes on Spotify and Apple Podcasts

The right tools can take a lot of the strain out of reading, note-taking and working through finance problems.

πŸ”Š Text to Speech & Reading Support

NaturalReader β€” naturalreaders.com

Microsoft Immersive Reader β€” built into Word, OneNote and Edge.

Read&Write by Texthelp β€” a comprehensive literacy support toolbar for reading, writing and studying.

πŸ“ Note-Taking & Organisation

Notion or OneNote β€” visual and flexible, great for non-linear thinking.

MindMeister or XMind β€” for mind mapping finance concepts.

πŸ”’ Maths & Finance Specific

Desmos β€” visual graphs and sliders.

Wolfram Alpha β€” step-by-step explanations rather than just answers.

A few approaches that work well, particularly for dyslexic finance learners.

  • Exam Success for Students with Dyslexia β€” guidance from the British Dyslexia Association
  • The Pomodoro Technique β€” short, timed study blocks with regular breaks to maintain focus
  • Read questions aloud β€” or use text-to-speech so you don't misread the data in the exam
πŸ’‘ In the exam, marks are awarded for showing you understand the concept and can apply it. Slow, careful reading of the question is time well spent.

All of the major awarding bodies offer reasonable adjustments and extra support in assessments β€” for example extra time, a reader, or assistive software. Check the details well before your exam, as some adjustments need to be arranged in advance and may require evidence.
